Reliance Jio vs Airtel

The tariff war between telecom operators has been growing ever since Reliance Jio entered the scene back in September. Airtel have been pushing out a number of plans to counter Jio’s offers, the most recent being Jio Summer Surprise and Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan that offer Jio Prime users 4G data at ultra-low cost rates till June-end.

Given the new data offers that are being launched almost every other week, we take a look at the best bundled data plans launched by Reliance Jio and Airtel.

Reliance Jio plans

The Reliance Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan offer provides Jio Prime customers with 1GB data per day till June-end with a recharge of Rs. 309. Along with this, Jio Prime subscribers get free calls, free roaming, and bundled Jio apps subscription, and 100 SMSes per day. This works out to roughly Rs. 3.6 per GB on the Rs. 309 pack.

Airtel plans

The Airtel Rs. 244 prepaid pack gives users 1GB data per day for 70 days (or Rs. 3.48 per GB) if they have a 4G smartphone and 4G SIM card; there are no restrictions of timing for data consumption except the 1GB daily FUP. On its website and MyAirtel app, the operator says the offer comes with unlimited STD and local calls, but users only get a maximum of 300 minutes of Airtel to Airtel calls per day without any charges, and 1,200 minutes of un-billed calls on the network for a week. If the user exhausts the bundled call minutes, they will be charged Rs. 0.10 per minute.

Under the Rs. 399 Airtel pack, the user again gets 1GB data per day for 70 days (at Rs. 5.7 per GB), provided they have a 4G smartphone and 4G SIM card. However, you also get bundled calls on other networks, not just to other Airtel numbers. On the other hand, there is a limit of 3,000 minutes for the 70-day period; if you exhaust the bundled these un-billable minutes, the rate is Rs. 0.10 per minute. On calls made to Airtel numbers, the limit is 300 minutes per day and 1,200 minutes per week.

Airtel has upgraded the data limit on its Rs. 345 pack from 1GB per day to 2GB per day (at Rs. 6.16 per GB). Moreover, there is no restriction of timing regarding the data consumption; this is a major incentive for users to buy the pack as they were restricted to 500MB for 12am and 6am, and the remaining 500MB for the rest of the day. The Rs. 345 Airtel pack with 28 days validity has the same limits on bundled calls as the Rs. 399 pack.

For Airtel postpaid customers, the company has not announced any new plans after the Reliance Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan offer, but it is giving 30GB of free data. Users need to login to the MyAirtel app by April 30 to get the free data under the offer.

Reliance Jio vs BSNL

The tariff war between telecom operators has been growing ever since Reliance Jio entered the scene back in September. BSNL have been pushing out a number of plans to counter Jio’s offers, the most recent being Jio Summer Surprise and Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan that offer Jio Prime users 4G data at ultra-low cost rates till June-end. Given the new data offers that are being launched almost every other week, we take a look at the best bundled data plans launched by Reliance Jio and BSNL.

Along with this, Jio Prime subscribers get free calls, free roaming, and bundled Jio apps subscription, and 100 SMSes per day. This works out to roughly Rs. 3.6 per GB on the Rs. 309 pack.

Similarly, Jio Prime users who buy the Rs. 509 recharge pack get 2GB data per day for 84 days (Rs. 3 per GB) under the Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan offer. And like the Rs. 309 plan, they will get free calls, free roaming, and bundled Jio apps subscription, and 100 SMSes per day.

BSNL plans

Under the Rs. 333 BSNL Triple Ace Plan, user get up to 3GB data per day for 90 days. This comes to a total of 270GB for the whole validity period, at Rs. 1.23 per GB of data. In comparison, Jio users will get only 84GB, or 168GB, data depending on the recharge pack they purchased. However, BSNL users will get 3G speeds, unlike 4G speeds offered by Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea.

Customers who opt for this will get 2GB data per day, and unlimited local and STD calls for 28 days with the Rs. 349 ‘Dil Khol Ke Bol’ plan (working out to Rs. 6.23 per GB). As is the case with the Rs. 333 BSNL pack, this plan also has provides 3G speeds, not 4G, and once the 2GB data per day is exhausted, the speed will go down to 80kbps.

The Rs. 395 BSNL ‘Nehle Pe Dehla’ plan provides 2GB of data per day for 71 days (at Rs. 2.78 per GB of data), along with bundled local and STD calls. The bundled calls to BSNL numbers are capped at 3,000 minutes and calls to other networks are restricted to 1,800 minutes in the validity period, and charges will be levied after the bundled minutes are exhausted. The speeds remain 3G.

5 Things to Expect From Reliance Jio in 2017

1. Jio DTH service

Reliance Jio is expected to launch Direct-to-Home (DTH) TV service, reportedly with 350+ channels, out of which over 50 will be HD channels. To use the service, customers will need to have the JioTV app and Jio SIM on their phones, and the connection will require a Jio home broadband connection. The hybrid Reliance Jio DTH set-top box will allow users to get cable channels as well as streaming services on their TV, similar to the Airtel Internet TV set-top box launched recently. The DTH service will be integrated with Jio's cloud storage platform, and the content will be saved online to stream; in fact, users will have the option to watch week-old TV content on the service, without the need for local storage. Expect features like voice controls, ability to play games over the cloud, and more.

Which brings us to the next Jio service that’s already being tested in many areas.

2. Reliance Jio broadband service

Reliance Jio is widely expected to launch a Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband service, which will deliver speeds up to 1Gbps. The pilot programme has already started, Reliance Industries said in its Q1 regulatory filing, and will be expanded to more cities soon. The service also got a mention in September when Mukesh Ambani launched Reliance Jio operations. The high-speed optical fibre service will likely come bundled with Jio services. There is no word on the Reliance Jio home broadband launch date and price yet.

Users having the Jio home broadband service are reportedly getting speeds between 70Mbps and 100Mbps. One user has tweeted screenshots showing download speeds of 743.28Mbps in Pune. However, it is not the only broadband service offering 1Gbps speed, as ACT Fibernet has already launched its gigabit service in Hyderabad.

3. Jio Money

While not exactly a new offering, you can expect Reliance to promote Jio Money in a big way this year. You can already use Reliance’s payment service at select retail outlets, and of course at various places online, but soon you can expect to use your mobile to pay for various things like metro rides and at convince stores. Sources tell Gadgets 360 Jio is also working on a solutions where receipts related to all purchases made via Jio Money will be managed in the cloud for you.

4. 4G VoLTE feature phone

4G VoLTE-enabled feature phones by Reliance Jio is in the offing, with the image of one leaked online already. The feature phone in the image sports hardware buttons for MyJio, JioTV, JioCinema, and JioMusic apps. A report says the VoLTE feature phone will have Spreadtrum chipsets, though talks are said to be on with Qualcomm and MediaTek as well. The feature phones are said to be priced between Rs. 999 and Rs. 1,500.

5. Home automation and other smart products

Reliance already has its brand of Reconnect accessories, and you can expect a lot more products to become available under that range this year. What’s more, the group is also said to be working on a range of home automation products that will of course work with the Jio network to let you be in control no matter where you are. The company is also working on a new app called Jio MediaShare that will let you easily stream content on your mobile devices from your PC or laptop. Jio has also developed Chromecast-like devices that let you enjoy the same experience on the big screen. The ability to start watching content on one screen and continue on another, seamlessly, is being touted as a big feature.
